BACKGROUND:

Reference: Spooky Jones is a supporting character of a LGBTQ-friendly super hero webcomic called The Young Protectors. It's worth noting that Spooky Jones is the name he gave himself because he has no idea who he used to be. Although he knows things like his favorite foods and TV shows, everything else about himself from before the age of 13 is a total blank. His first memory is finding himself in Hell with nothing but a piece of birthday cake and the clothes on his back.

As Spooky himself put it, he was the shiniest toy Hell's monsters had seen in a long while. Forced to defend himself against unspeakable horrors, Spooky soon discovered he possessed innate magical talents and developed them as months went by. Presumably using the magic attached to birthdays as an extra boost, a year later he succeeded in passing through the increasingly weakening gate that separates Hell and Earth. Hoisting a decapitated monster head and wandering around in a daze, it wasn't long before he was apprehended by the U.S. Government. While being held for questioning, he met Amanda Charleyboy, a telepathic girl who became a major source of support for Spooky during his re-integration into society. This re-integration included him starting his own monster-hunting business, a string of inappropriate relationships with older women, and eventually a healthier romance with Amanda herself that later had an amicable transition into Just Friends.

As of now, little is known about his time from Hell because Spooky generally avoids saying anything about it. However, he puts his expertise and experience to use by becoming a world-renowned demonologist who investigates odd missing-persons cases and fights others mages who have gone insane due to the side-effects of using magic.

His relationship with the U.S. Government is rather strained because they rely on his expertise but also view him as a massive threat due to his own magic use and the mental instability it should be causing him (but isn't, due to currently unexplained reasons). However, because of his reliability and good will, Spooky is eventually able to gain the trust of a government agent who confides in him about his suspicions that a powerful sorceress has infiltrated the government itself and is currently using her power to cover up a massive conspiracy.

Spooky is also the first to join The Young Protectors, Amanda's team of under-aged heroes that work strictly as search and rescue. Once he's old enough to graduate from the team, though, Spooky chooses to stay despite numerous invitations from other superhero teams that see the benefit of having a powerful magic-user on their side.

When a supervillain called The Annihilator uses Kyle to open a portal to Hell, Spooky is one of the first people to come to Kyle's aid, and he's the one who helps Kyle understand that he's worthy of love and respect despite his mistakes. He also asks a series of questions that reminds Kyle that he's still a hero who has a duty to protect the world from monsters, and that there's still time to set things right.

During their fight to keep Laampros, a King of Hell who also happens to be Kyle's demon father, from claiming the Earth, Spooky absorbs the souls of numerous human sacrifices with the hopes of restoring them to their bodies once the chaos is over. He is incapacitated for a good portion of the fight, but remains conscious enough to overhear Laampros observe that Kyle has feelings for Spooky.

He soon succumbs to the numerous souls eating away at his consciousness, leaving nothing but an empty shell of a man with no a heartbeat. Once the fight against Laampros is over, however, a tearful, determined Kyle uses his newly-enhanced demonic powers to bring Spooky back to life. Proud of what Kyle has accomplished during his face-off with the King of Hell, Spooky gives his best friend a tender kiss on the lips, changing his status to Kyle's official Love Interest.

They can't keep kissing forever, though, and they're soon cleaning up the mess Laampros left behind while preparing for Congressional hearings.

PERSONALITY:

Spooky Jones is an odd soul. This is a fact he embraces by taking a derogatory comment made by a police officer who described him as having “spooky eyes” and making it part of the name he gives himself. This is done after returning from a harrowing one-year journey through Hell with no memories of who he used to be. While at a stage in life when most teenagers are trying to figure out who they are, Spooky is forced to reinvent himself from the ground up, starting with a year’s worth of traumatic encounters with countless monsters and demons, and a handful of strange, supernatural abilities he’d developed while fighting for his life.

While someone in his position could have easily gone off the rails, this is thankfully averted with the guidance of Amanda Charleyboy, a level-headed telepathic girl who becomes his first meaningful connection with humanity after he escapes Hell. At first, Spooky viewed himself as a monster that lost the right to call itself human after the extreme measures he took to get back home. But it’s Amanda who helps him reframe those thoughts in a more positive light, and he soon begins to see himself as a survivor who has gifts to share with the world by virtue of his experiences. “I’m Spooky Jones, and I fight monsters” are the first words he says once Amanda helps him understand that he has the power to decide which personal narrative to believe and live by.

Over the course of six years, Spooky develops into a remarkably easygoing 20-year-old man with an irreverent sense of humor and a great capacity for love and empathy. Although he’s not inclined to discuss his experiences in Hell, Spooky is, for the most part, an open book to those around him, and his warm, friendly nature gives him a magnetic personality that draws people in. During a Truth or Dare game in which Amanda prohibits questions about sex or Spooky’s time in Hell, one of his colleagues complains that there’s practically nothing left to ask Spooky that he hasn’t already shared. In that same game, Spooky is unable to answer the classic “marry, shag, kill” question since he could never consider hurting one of his friends, and so he instead readily accepts a dare to spend the rest of the game in his underwear. A month later, when Kyle is vulnerable and upset at having been taken advantage of by The Annihilator, Spooky is the one who candidly engages with him without any judgment. He makes Kyle laugh, helps him understand that he doesn’t have to let bad experiences define his character, and assures him that he’s absolutely worthy of other people’s love and trust. Even after giving a cool “walk-off” line, Spooky can’t resist coming back to give Kyle a tight hug.

In short, although he’s known throughout the world for his expertise in magic and the occult, those who truly know Spooky understand that his great empathy and love for others, even after a horrific year in Hell, is what makes him truly remarkable.

During his teens, this magnetic personality and open nature combined with an apparent inability to connect with most kids his own age contributed to a series of brief, inappropriate relationships with adult women (a pattern Amanda disapprovingly pointed out to him multiple times). The exact reasons for this haven’t been fully explained in the comic, but it’s probably safe to say that physical contact, whether sexual or chaste, is very important to Spooky. As a tactile healer, his touch literally heals wounds, and skin-to-skin contact gives him relief from the unnatural cold that has plagued his body ever since his return from Hell.

Spooky also possess an incredibly strong will that was most likely forged in the fires of Hell. He’s one of two mages on Earth who can wield magic while keeping their sanity intact. Another example of this iron will is when he refuses to give up on a room full of human sacrifices even after his colleagues have started mobilizing for an impending threat. He stubbornly ignores Amanda’s commands to get into formation in favor of throwing together any last-minute spell that might save them. In an act of desperation, he absorbs the souls of the victims for safekeeping, and he nearly loses his life in the process. This stubbornness is reflected in smaller ways as well, such as how he secretly keeps a demonic bear in his possession despite being firmly told to get rid of it.

As intense as Spooky can be, his lighthearted nature cannot be overstated. His tendency to joke around despite the serious nature of his work likely stems from his ability to roll with the punches, to the point where it’s honestly difficult to faze or embarrass him. From gleefully announcing that he and his colleagues are looking at porn of themselves, to laughingly acknowledging Amanda’s ability to break him in half, Spooky doesn’t put on airs or sugarcoat anything. Some of his comments can come across as tactless, such as when he informs Kyle that he got the 411 on the fact that Kyle is “a big ‘mo and the son of Satan”. In the same scene, he also takes a stab at everything troubling Kyle in a single joke about how he’s “not gonna bend over in front of [Kyle] to grab the holy water”, but still ends his quip with a casual reassurance that they’re still buds and a comforting arm around Kyle’s shoulders. At the same time, his comments are padded with surprising insight and maturity when the situation calls for it, such as when he leads Kyle through a series of questions that get him to realize that his mistakes don’t make him a bad person.

At the same time, he’s capable of maintaining professionalism and clearly treasures his friendships more than anything. In fact, his leader Amanda was once his romantic partner years before, but their prior history doesn’t negatively affect their deep respect and fondness for one another. Even though breaking up was Amanda’s idea, he has been perfectly agreeable about keeping their current relationship platonic and hasn’t shown any signs of trying to change her mind.

“You literally went to hell and you came back full of jokes and sex appeal and warmth and everything that makes you so easy to love," a colleague says out of frustration, but that's pretty much Spooky in a nutshell.

POWER:

I. Innate Magic Spooky has powerful innate magical prowess that he has developed into a wide spectrum of abilities, including both demonic and Enochian magic. In MoM, this innate magic will be limited to the following abilities:

  • Illusions - Using mental focus to will ideas into corporeal form,
he can make anything from a dog to a flying Chinese New Year dragon.
It can interact with the real world, but cannot remain independent of Spooky.

For example, an illusionary dragon can rescue a civilian from a high
fall. It can grab the person physically. However, it cannot act
independently of Spooky's thought process or exist without his continuous
    focus.

Things like food can be made, but would serve no purpose. It would
have no nutritional value whatsoever. Something like money would
disappear as soon as Spooky's focus dwindled.

  • Levitation - Primarily done for show, Spooky can use his magic to
make items float off of the ground. This does not apply for heavy
machinery, large pieces of debris, or anything that would normally
require heavy lifting. He cannot make items fly, making it useless
for combat purposes or intensive search-and-rescue efforts.

  • Ectoplasmic Manipulation – Spooky can excrete a green viscous
fluid from his body that’s a materialization of the spiritual world.
He can then manipulate the fluid into a force that can physically
block, trap, incapacitate, hurt, etc. corporeal items or entities.
It’s been shown as a giant mace or a formless mass before.

Once the ectoplasm has been formed, he cannot create a second form of
ectoplasm. If he wishes to change targets, he must use the ectoplasm
he’s already formed, or release it and reform it again into something
else. His concentration must be on this ability; he cannot multitask
with other spells or magical abilities.

  • Healing Touch – He can heal physical injuries with a touch. The
more grievous the injury, the longer he must stand there and touch the
person. He can use any part of his body, so long as he is skin-to-skin
    with the injured person.

In MoM, more intensive healing will make him physically tired. Dealing
with surface injuries on several people wouldn't pose a problem,
but broken bones, internal injuries, blood loss, etc. will take a
longer time, and subsequently take more out of him.

For some this healing touch gives the person a pleasing rush that can
cause sexual arousal and awkward boners. Enjoy questioning your
    sexuality, gentlemen.

  • Clairvoyance – Spooky has limited clairvoyance within a 100m
range. He’s been shown assessing the number of people and their
physical state inside a nearby building. This can also include
superficial knowledge gleaned from those he touches, as well. For
example, he may know the whereabouts of a lost item said person has
    been looking for.

  • Disease Resistance – He can’t contract diseases, like viruses,
    bacterial infections, STDs, nothing.

II. Car Summoning A MoM-only ability. Like it says on the tin, Spooky can summon his 1965 red Pontiac Firebird.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[Today the network is treated to the sight of a young Asian man in his 20s sporting a backwards baseball cap and a dark hoodie. Some people might consider it an odd choice of clothes considering the summer heat, but Spooky's laid-back smile and friendly message don't leave much time to ponder on that.]

Hey everybody. My name's Spooky Jones, and I need your help. I've got a seriously delicious problem on my hands. Well, actually...one, two, three, four... [A pause.] Eight delicious problems. And by problems, I mean these...

[He turns the camera onto a row of cakes neatly lined up along the counter.]

...gorgeous cakes that me and Kyle can't possibly eat by ourselves. Here, just take a close look at this one.

[Seemingly by itself, one of the cakes actually raises from the counter and levitates closer to the camera.] Get a load of that delectable chocolate icing. Those white sprinkles scattered evenly across the top. Also, I have it on good authority that there's mousse somewhere in there, and it is to die for.

[The plate settles back down onto a nearby coffee table, and the camera swings back around to Spooky's grin.]

Anyone want some of that? I can totally arrange for home delivery. It's like getting a pizza. But better! Because cake makes everything better, am I right?

How much am I charging, you may ask? The short answer is nothing. The long answer is that it'd be really rad if people who want cake could answer me these simple question:

Are there any magic-users where you're from? If so, are they, like...normal? Or are they crazy?

And that's all there is to it. Hit me up if you're interested.
